| Professor Andrew James Michael Boulton is currently a professor at the University of Manchester and the University of Miami. His academic interests are in complications of diabetes, particularly diabetic foot disease and diabetic nephropathy. He has written over 400 articles and co-authored eight relevant books. Professor Boulton was the editor of "Diabetic Medicine" from 1991 to 1995. After serving as president of both the EASD’s Diabetic Foot Study Group and the ADA’s Foot Wound Interest Group, he is now the vice president of EASD. At this symposium, Professor Boulton will give a presentation called, “The diabetic foot for 2011,” which will detail recent research trends, changes in treatment and prospects in diabetic foot disease. |

| Prof. Philipp Scherer is the director of the Touchstone Diabetes Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. As one of the world’s leading scientists, Dr. Scherer has studied the integrated physiology of the adipocyte and the impact on whole body energy homeostasis, inflammation and cancer. He is one of the pioneering researchers to identify adipocyte-derived factors (adipokines) and describe adipocyte physiology. Specifically, he has cloned adiponectin and has implicated the downstream signaling of adiponectin in the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Recently, his research team demonstrated that adiponectin also plays a role in cancer cell growth and survival. In this presentation, he will discuss the impact of adipokines on liver physiology. |
| Philipp Scherer 교수는 현재 University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center 에 재직 중이며 Touchstone Diabetes Center 의 소장을 맡고 있다. Scherer 교수는 지방조직에서 분비하는 신호전달 물질인 “아디포카인” 생리적 역할 규명과 비만개체 내 지방조직의 변화가 대사질환 및 암에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구하고 있다. 특히, Scherer 교수는 지방조직에서 생산하는 다양한 아디포카인 중 “아디포넥틴” 을 처음 클로닝하였으며 아디포넥틴이 수용체를 통하여 지방 및 당대사를 조절하는 신호전달과정에 대하여 연구하여 오고 있다. 최근 Scherer 교수는 아디포넥틴이 체내 에너지대사 항상성조절 이외에도 유방암을 포함한 일부 암세포의 증식과 제어과정에도 관여함을 발표하였다. Scherer 교수는 이번 발표에서는 지방세포 유래 물질이 간세포 및 간조직의 기능조절에 미치는 영향에 대한 최근 연구결과를 발표할 예정이다.
